How To Declutter Your Home

If you have been considering decluttering your space, but time and motivation seem to keep getting in your way, then here are some great reasons why you should stop putting it off and actually prioritize getting rid of all the bits and pieces in your home that no longer bring value to your life.

Less to Clean: No one loves cleaning, and less clutter means less cleaning. Not only do you have fewer items to wipe down, but dusting clear surfaces is a quick and straightforward task that you may even enjoy doing.

Less to Organize: If you feel you are regularly organizing and reorganizing your clutter, then a quick purge of all the items that you no longer need, or use, can help alleviate this situation.

Less Stress: Being in a cluttered environment is stressful, whereas a clear, organized home will give the occupant a sense of calm and tranquility. If you are in any doubt about this, you need only declutter one small space and spend some time there to see how this makes you feel. You will soon benefit from a sense of calm. Looking at our own clutter is simply a reminder or how disorganized we are, and how much work we must do.

More Space: Who would not like more space? You may even find that you can repurpose a space or finally squeeze in that home office you have always wanted.

More Income: One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and by selling all items you no longer need, you can turn that clutter into extra money for a rainy day.

Make a Plan

Write down a list of clutter areas that you want to tackle. This will help you prioritize your decluttering and putting it down on paper can make the task seem less daunting and more like something you can work your way through.

Do one room or one space at a time. There are certain ‘hot spots’ that are going to be more challenging than others. For many people, this may be the closet, the garage, the attic and or the basement. Dining rooms are often already quite clear and are, therefore, an excellent place to start.

Set time frames to ensure that certain areas do not go unchecked for long periods. You may be putting off going through all the paperwork covering every surface in the office, but a solid timeframe will force you to tackle the issue and get the job done.

Create Extra Storage

Losing a lot of the items you no longer need will, of course, open up more storage options, but you should also consider creating extra storage.  Consider clearly labeled boxes that can be kept under beds, or even think about investing in portable car garages as an affordable option for more storage.

Create a Sorting System

For each room that you tackle, have four boxes that items can go straight into the labeled keep, donate, throw away, and put in storage. This will make the whole task a lot easier from the outset.
