Adjusting Your Lifestyle To Go From Renting To Owning A Home

renting-to-woning

In the property world, renting can be a pretty simple process. It might not seem that way when you’re getting passed around by estate agents, rent prices are rising, and landlords have strict requirements, but once the paperwork is signed you’re generally good to go.

It’s the moment you decide you want to buy and own that renting really comes off as the preferable option! When home ownership is the next step and you want to move onto the property ladder, the renting lifestyle you’ve lived thus far will have to dramatically change.

Taking these changes in your stride will be difficult – we certainly won’t lie to you about that. However, they don’t have to be impossible, even if they take a long time to get used to.

With that in mind, here are three of the most stringent lifestyle adjustments you’re going to have to make if you want to buy a house in future.

Learning to Be Responsible for Everything

Renting puts the onus on the landlord. While you’re the tenant, you’re not the one who has to fix things when something goes wrong. You just need to report it and wait for the maintenance team to turn up.

Indeed, living in loft apartments means someone else is responsible for making sure the pipes don’t freeze and the sink doesn’t block and the air conditioning stays on an even keel. Unless the landlord specifically outlined any repair responsibilities they wouldn’t be taking on, a lease means someone else comes in to sort things out.

This is quite the jump to get used to when you move into an owned property. If you’ve never had to patch your own walls or fix an extractor fan before, you’ve got a lot of DIY knowledge to pick up!

Getting Used to Saving More Often

Planning to buy a house one day is the end point of a long, protracted period of saving money. When renting, the main thing you have to do is come up with the monthly rent and make sure that’s in the bank.

When looking to buy, you have to pay rent AND try to save every other penny – hopefully in a high interest account where you can pick up a few extra hundred a year as well.

That’s one of the toughest tasks known to the current rental market. If you want to buy, your budget is going to need some serious tweaking!

Finding an Incredibly Strong Sense of Patience

You won’t be able to buy a house tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or honestly even next year. It’s going to take a lot of time to get your funds and paperwork together, and even then the deal could fall through at any moment.

Conclusion

Learning to be patient is an understated part of adjusting your renting lifestyle, but you really will have to temper expectations from the get go.  Want to move from renting to owning? Get ready for these changes!
