Caring For Aging Relatives

aging-relatives

In the last century, western culture began to do something unheard of in society; we began to have our aging relatives cared for by institutions and purpose-built facilities. Part of this was because a more affluent society could do so, and part of it was because, with everyone at work, there was no one to take care of people at home. There are some excellent options for elder care, and sometimes that is the right decision to make. But taking care of aging relatives can be a rewarding experience for everyone, depending on the family dynamic and the health and abilities of the people involved. If you have decided that your loved ones are going to stay close to you. There are many options to make the experience comfortable and convenient.

Hospice in the Home:

Depending on your relative’s needs, you should expect to make some changes to your home to accommodate them. It is good to provide a room at the same level as the eating area and bathroom; this will make daily tasks more manageable.  After that, you need to look at some of their access issues, in their room and around the house. Your life will become easier with the purchase of an adjustable bed, like the kind that is available at Forte Healthcare. Getting in out of bed and being comfortable through the night is one of the most critical concerns as people age.

Granny Flat:

For many people, the best solution for aging relatives is to construct a granny flat. With the construction of a separate residence on your property, a relative can retain some of their independence and also have the benefit of being close to family.  The granny flat provides the opportunity to grow old with dignity and still have the safety net of living close to family. An alternative to the granny flat is to build a basement suite or addition to your home with a separate entrance.

Safety Check:

Once you have some of the major issues looked after, you should look around for safety concerns. Search your house for trip hazards, loose railings, and areas that are difficult to get in and out of. Make sure you have functioning smoke detectors, and perhaps even consider hooking up a call button or fall alarm.

Wheelchair Accessible:

Another change that may become necessary is to make sure that your house is wheelchair accessible. And this is something you need to consider before you begin. If it is not possible to make these changes then you might have to reconsider your plans.

Conclusion

Many people choose these days to take care of their elderly relatives, rather than have them live in another location. It is something that used to be a regular and accepted part of life. In other cultures, it something that is done without question. In most cases, the older person experiences an elevated standard of living and better mental health. If you make good choices early on, it is often an easy, natural, and rewarding thing to do. Family is the most valuable thing we have.
