Barn Raising Project From The Ground Up

It has been slow going on the house project…but we do have a barn. Woo Hoo…..happy dance ♥ The barn raising construction is going very well.

Let’s take a look at the progress.

FRAMING

Beginning of the barn. The plans and finding the builder just seemed to come together quickly but the plans for the house and the builder, not so much. So we decided to go ahead with the barn. That way we could also start storing items while getting the other house ready to sell.  Whoa….so much work ahead.

CONCRETE FLOOR

 It was exciting to see the concrete floor poured and finished. The barn floor is 24′ x 26′ with an upstairs loft area measuring the same.

Roof beams window framing and poured the concrete floor. (Just a note here: not all concrete companies are created the same) Do your homework and check out who is the best in your area. Our barn floor turned out perfect.  Great job!

Now we are finally making progress.

ROOF/UPSTAIRS LOFT

We wanted the barn to have a vintage look. It will have a lean-to for additional space. There will be an upper-level loft, that is the reason for the steep pitch of the roof.

LOFT STAIRS

Stairs built that leads to the upstairs loft area.

The rafters you see were special ordered.

LEAN-TO AREA

View of the lean-to. The windows are from Menards. We went with Metal siding and metal roof from a local supplier.

DOORS

The doors are being hand constructed. Double doors on the front and single side door on the lean-to. Native Indiana wood was used for the door frames and window trim all from a local sawmill. Finished Barn…completed in June 2014.

Update (2018)  

We have now been living at the farmhouse for 2 years, and we still have lots to do. By doing a lot of the finishing work ourselves we have saved money but it is slow going. Getting the electric ran to the barn in 2016 was a tremendous step, and was done when the house electric was installed. The underground wire was run so no unsightly wires running from the house to the barn. Fall 2017 gutter hooks were installed. 2018 plans: Barn security light and gutters.Guess what is one of the best things about being located in the country, no outdoor street lights, surrounded by forest, at night?

Looking up and seeing thousands of stars, on a clear night.  It is breathtaking.
