The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Style

After many of us have spent the last year working from home, wearing pajamas or sweatpants, the idea of going back to the office or the outside world again and having to wear restrictive business wear and high heels again doesn’t seem all that appealing. Let’s be honest, most of us would much rather be sitting around the house, doing nothing, wearing our lazy clothes, than having to dress up and go out somewhere. The good news is that loungewear has come a long way from frumpy pajamas and sloppy sweats in recent years. Not only are there lots more options now, but loose, comfy clothes are actually in style right now. Thank you, athleisure!

Thanks to the increasing stylishness of loungewear, you can go from a day out with your friends to relaxing on the couch in front of Netflix without feeling the need to get changed into something more comfortable. You can even wear your sweatpants to the bar these days, as long as you style them in the right way, and call them joggers. We’re in the golden age of comfortable clothing, which is ideal for the lazy girl who still wants to look stylish. Here are some of the top style tips to be lazy, comfortable, and stylish all that the same time.

Sort Out Your Wardrobe

Spend some time going through your wardrobe. Pull out every piece of uncomfortable clothing that you own, bag it up nearly, and store it somewhere else. Don’t put it back in your wardrobe. It could be in the cupboard, in boxes under the bed, in the closet in your spare room…anywhere out of sight. You aren’t going to throw this stuff away, as unfortunately, you might still need some of it occasionally. What you’re doing is getting out of the way so you can really focus on the comfy clothing that you own and actually want to wear. All that other stuff is just taking up space and making it harder to see what you have.

Set Rules For Shopping

If you’re going to buy yourself some new clothes, make it easier by sticking to a couple of stores. Don’t bother to look anywhere else. If you look through your clothes, you’ll probably find that most of them are from the same handful of places anyway. You already know who makes the clothes that you like! You can stop wasting time and a lot of energy by running all over the mall and getting frustrated when you can’t find anything that you like in most of the stores that you go into. Instead of turning shopping into a marathon event, pick three to five stores that you know you like and stick with those. If they don’t have something specific in stock that you know that you really want, take it as a sign that you weren’t supposed to have it anyway, or would actually like it after all, and move on.

Stick To A Color Palette

Choose a mostly neutral color palette for your clothes, and stick to it. This way, everything in your closet will go together, and matching things up into outfits will be much faster in easier. This will not only save you a lot of time in the morning, but it will also mean that you can get dressed when you’re still half asleep and you’ll still look cute and put together.

Choose A Signature Color

Choose one signature color that you can mix into your wardrobe if you want to liven up your palette of neutrals. By choosing just one, everything will still go together, so putting together an outfit will still be easy, but you can get a more interesting finished look. After all, even lazy girls like to mix things up sometimes.

Say Goodbye To Fastenings

‘Easy on, easy off’ is going to be your new fashion mantra. Say goodbye to fiddly fastenings, like buttons, hooks, and snaps. Shirts with collars are uncomfortable and more trouble than they’re worth anyway. Think about how easy your clothes are to get on and off. If you can’t get it on or off in less than three seconds, forget about it. You aren’t going to want to wear it. There are lots of fashionable options for drawstring pants and shorts, trapeze dresses, and stretch fabrics available now, so you never have to fight your way into or out of your clothes again. No more being a contortionist to zip up your own dress.

Get A Work Uniform

Take the stress out of getting dressed for work in the morning, and set yourself a work uniform that you can stick to. If there are no decisions involved, you can get dressed quickly and still look office-appropriate. A simple shift dress is incredibly easy to put on and wear but still looks smart enough for work. Shift dresses look sleek and tailored, but they don’t feel too restrictive to wear. They’re comfortable to wear for long periods and to sit in, plus they’re very forgiving if your weight fluctuates up or down a few pounds. You can dress your shift dress up a little more with some great shoes and pretty jewelry if your office is more formal. You can also wear these all year round. Buy a few in your color palette, and you’re set for office wear.

Make Sure All Your Clothes Are Machine-Washable

Dry cleaning is a pain. It’s expensive, and taking all your clothes to the dry cleaners and picking them up again is a chore that most of could do without it. Chances are, you’re going to put it off forever and just never wear anything you have to dry-clean. We’ve all done it; bought a beautiful dress that is dry-clean only, then end up just wearing it until it gets dirty, then either leaving into the dry-cleaning pile for months or forgetting and accidentally machine washing it and ruining it. Save yourself the stress. Only buy clothes that can be machine-washed.

Wash Everything On Cold, And Dry It On Low

If you do this, all your clothes will last a lot longer, as they’re being put through less wear and tear by the washing machine and the dryer. If you can keep your clothes for longer, you’ll need to shop less, and can save yourself the chore of having to shop for clothes.

Ditch The Heels

Nobody is comfortable in high heels. Ditch them. There are lots of stylish options for flats, sneakers, sandals, and low, chunky heels out there. You can find suitable flats for day or night, for work or the weekend. For example, smart loafers look great for the office, whereas Birkenstock sandals are perfect for a comfortable weekend shoe. You don’t need to force your feet into painful stiletto heels to look chic. You don’t need those painful shoes sitting in your closet looking at you accusingly either. It’s time to say goodbye.

Buy Matching Pieces

Matching tops and bottoms take all the annoyance out of getting dressed and trying to find pieces that go together. There’s nothing wrong with a matchy-matchy outfit. In fact, a co-ord set looks pulled together and fashionable, with minimal effort from you.

Avoid All Embellishment

Embellishments on your clothes might look nice, but they can be really annoying. Beads, buttons, and sequins fall off. Embroidery detail gets snagged. Graphics fade in the wash, crack and peel. When this happens, your outfit quickly goes from being comfortable to looking sloppy. This is not what you want. If you feel as though your outfits look dull without any kind of embellishment, add in a print to make your look seem more interesting. Graphic prints like polka dots, stripes, and gingham are easy to style and will liven up your outfits if you feel as though they’re boring. If you want to add some sparkle to your style, try a lurex knit or some metallic leather.

No Belts

Good belts are not cheap, and a bad one will ruin your look. Cinching in your waist isn’t comfortable either. Get pieces tailored so you don’t need a belt, and highlight your waist with a layered cropped jacket or top instead.

Buy Silk Pajamas

You can wear these outside of the house without looking and feeling strange. Perfect for days when you’re just running errands!

Layer Lace Bralettes

Layer a lacy bralette under a top or dress that is a little loose or revealing. If your bra straps or band are showing, it will look deliberate, not sloppy.

Buy A Good Romper

A romper gives you the ease of wearing a dress, without the worry of accidentally flashing your underwear if there’s a strong breeze or you’re getting out of the car. The best of both worlds!

Show A Little Skin

If you’re worried about looking frumpy in loose clothing, show some skin. Actual skin is much sexier than squeezing yourself into a tight outfit. If you have a loose top on, wear something short on your bottom half. If your bottoms are loose, pair them with something that shows off your arms, shoulders, back, or chest.
