Seven Landscaping Tips For Beginners

Do you dream of having a beautiful garden but don’t know where to start? You can create a garden that you can be proud of, that works for relaxing, playing and entertaining, with these landscaping tips for beginners.

  1. Before you start, do some research to get some ideas. Look on Pinterest or buy some gardening magazines to find some ideas you like. Do some research to find which ideas would work for your garden, and would be appropriate for the kind of soil you have and the amount of direct sunlight your garden gets. Measure your garden and draw up a plan so you’re ready to start.
  2. Create a cohesive design by thinking about colors and heights of plants. Choose plants in colors that complement each other and think about the heights when planting. Group plants with the taller ones at the back, and smaller ones at the front. Create interesting shapes with differing heights for a more interesting flowerbed. Varying textures can also make things look more interesting.
  3. For a smart finish, edge flower beds and paths. Bricks, rocks, paving stones or wood edging gives the garden a clean finish. Edging is practical too, as it can keep weeds a bay and makes mowing the lawn without clipping a flower bed much easier.
  4. Add some curb appeal by giving your mailbox a makeover too. If your mailbox has seen better days, give it a fresh coat of paint and clearly mark your house number on the side. If it’s in poor condition, replace it with a new mailbox. To make a statement, why not pick one in a fun color or cheerful design?
  5. Add lighting. Add some practical lighting, like by the front door and along any paths. This will make it easier and safer when you come home in the dark, as you’ll be able to see where you’re going and to get your key in the door. You can also add lighting that is purely decorative. Use colored lights around flower beds to show off your favorite plants. To avoid having to arrange complicated electrics, use solar lights that will recharge during the day and then come on at night.
  6. Keep your lawn looking lush and green by watering it. If the weather is hot and there hasn’t been much rain, the lawn could start looking brown and dry, so make sure you include it in your watering routine. If it’s dry, don’t over mow your lawn either. Aim to only mow the top third of the grass to avoid cutting it back too far.
  7. Don’t focus on the front of the house. A lot of landscaping is only put in around the house itself, forgetting the rest of the garden. Create a more pleasing garden by designing a layout that makes the most of the whole space

Of course, the easiest way to get a beautiful garden is to hire a professional landscaping company. That way, you’ll get the perfect garden to enjoy without having to do the hard work of maintaining it yourself.

Thanks for the tip that I should do some research before I start my landscaping project. It would be nice to wake up to a beautiful garden next year, but I’m not sure what type of plants I should get to make my backyard look great. I think I’ll hire a service to assist me once I’ve decided what I want so they’ll be able to find it and install them to my backyard easily.
