Wooden flooring is an excellent choice in any home. It’s attractive, versatile, surprisingly easy to clean, and durable. In short, choose a great floor, such as this herringbone flooring, and spend a little time looking after it, and you’ll never need to change it.
If you fail to look after it you’re likely to notice stains and even damp penetration. At best that will mean sanding the floor and resealing it. If the damp is extreme it can even destroy the wooden floor, leaving you needing to start again.
That’s why you need to know how to clean your wooden flooring effectively.
Sweep Daily
The first thing to do is get a soft brush, preferably one that uses anti-static cloths. These are excellent at attracting dust. Simply run the brush around the room once a day to remove most of the debris and prevent your floor from staining or becoming sticky.
Vacuum Regularly
Alongside your daily sweep, it’s a good idea to vacuum your floor once or twice a week. Of course, you need to use a soft brush on your vacuum, preferably one designed for use on hardwood flooring. This will prevent it from being scratched.
Vacuuming is a great way to pick up the debris that’s been missed by your brush.
Washing The Floor
Hardwood doesn’t like water. If you leave water on the floor then it will soak in, causing a watermark and potentially damaging the wood.
However, it still needs to be washed to remove residue on the floor and maintain the perfect finish.
The answer is to focus on a small section of the floor at a time. You’ll need to purchase a dedicated hardwood cleaning product as this will help to clean and protect your floor.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the cleaner and add it to the water. Then, when mopping the floor, focus on a small area at a time and, make sure you wring your mop out first. It should be just damp when it touches the floor.
Once you’ve been over the floor or section of the floor with your mop, you can switch to a dry cloth and run this over the same area. It will remove any excess moisture, protecting the floor and helping it to look great.
Polish
Your hardwood floor will benefit from a polish every few months. The exact frequency depends on how much traffic passes over the floor on a daily basis. When polishing you’ll want to use a little soap in the water when you wash the floor. This will remove any residue polish from the last time, allowing you to start again.
You can then put some polish on a cloth and work your way across a section of the floor. Polish the area with a dry cloth to ensure the product has soaked n and any excess has been removed. It will restore the original shine and help to protect your hardwood flooring from spills and stains.
