Just as you need to make an extra effort to stay healthy in winter, you need to put some effort into keeping your home healthy too, and of course, when your home is healthy, you are more likely to be healthy too.

That being the case, here are a few things you can do to keep your home healthy this winter:

Keep it clean

You should keep your home clean all year round if you want to increase its lifespan and avoid having to make lots of costly repairs, but this is even more important in the winter months. Keeping your home clean, especially by vacuuming regularly and cleaning the sheets often, will help to keep dust and mites at bay because they love the cold and will tend to thrive otherwise and help to kill off various viruses that are so common in the wintertime.

Keep it warm

The cost of heating your home may have risen sharply recently, but it is important that you heat your home if you are able to, which means, if your heating system is broken, organizing a timely heating repair is vital too. Ideally, your home should be heated to at least 35.6 Fahrenheit to help to prevent dampness and mold from growing and most importantly, to ensure you and your family are warm enough to stay healthy (older people and people with certain illnesses may require higher temp homes).

Keep the windows open

It’s cold in the winter, so most of us tend to avoid opening the windows for very long if we can help it. However, if you are looking to keep your home healthy, then letting lots of fresh air find its way in is vital. Why? Because if your home is not properly ventilated in the winter, it is more susceptible to mold growth, Not only that, but fresh air is really good for you too. So, open the windows for at least 10 minutes every morning and evening to stop your home from getting damp and stale.

Run a dehumidifier or humidifier

If your home tends to get damp, then running a dehumidifier will help to remove moisture from the air, which will prevent it from affecting the structure of your home, A dehumidifier is also great at removing allergens like dust from the air, and can make the air in your home more breathable to people who have conditions like asthma, so it really is a healthy addition to any home, especially in winter.

Of course, if the air in your home is very dry and cold in winter, then running a humidifier, will make the air moister, which can prevent the property from getting too stale, and help you to breathe easier by keeping your sinuses moist too, Just make sure your home is no more than 50 percent humid or that could cause damp and dust mites to thrive.

A healthy home is easier to maintain and much better for you and your family too, so take your responsibilities seriously and look after your home this winter.
