Gym memberships are expensive, and let’s face it, lots of us sign up and then avoid going because we’re too busy or too tired. That’s why home gyms have become so popular. Home gyms can be created in areas both big and small, and pretty much anyone can have one. There are lots of ways you can make a gorgeous gym area that’s also practical, simply follow the tips below.
Set up a free weights area
One of the most important aspects of any work out is strength training. Whether you’re trying to lose or gain weight, or just tone up, weights are essential. Luckily, you don’t need big machines like they have at commercial gyms to get a strength workout. Select some dumbells from Decathlon in the right size and consider building a rack to keep them neat. You may also want to add a mat for extra comfort when you lift.
Choose at least one cardio machine
Even if you mostly focus on lifting, you’ll want to get a little cardio in as well. It’s usually recommended that you do three 30-minute cardio sessions a week for your health. Luckily, there are plenty of options for cardio machines, including:
- Treadmills
- Steppers
- Exercise bikes
- Cross trainers
If you dislike machines, consider setting up an area with a TV so you can watch cardio workout videos and have plenty of space.
Consider building a shower area
Why not consider adding an ensuite bathroom to your home gym? It means you don’t have to rush upstairs for a shower and have a space to change and relax after your workout, just like a real gym! You may need to look into home repiping, to get the pipes into the right place, but it’s usually fairly easy to add a bathroom, and it can be your own little sanctuary after a workout.
Follow exercise recommendations
One disadvantage of home gyms is that you don’t get an induction or personal training sessions. But you can of course seek expert advice to get the most of your home gym. Look at the government’s physical activity exercise guidelines, ensuring that you get enough activity every day, and choose exercises that are suitable for your abilities, without pushing too hard. Many new home gym owners sign up for an exercise programme or get a few personal trainer sessions to begin with, so they can make the most of their workouts.
If you’re someone who constantly struggles to get enough exercise in or has a certain goal in mind they’re trying to reach, then a home gym can be a big advantage. It means you can work out when you first wake up in the morning, or when you get in from work. You also have all the equipment to yourself and can watch TV or blast your music if you want to. Some people have big home gyms, while others use a box room or small extension to add one. It depends on the space you have and the sort of gym you want to build.
