A Resilient Renovation: How to Avoid That Sense of Dread!

Home renovations are very rarely a cut-and-dry practice. There are so many issues that can crop up during the course of any renovation, whether it’s hidden issues such as plumbing or wiring, or more obvious things that can cause dreaded financial problems that stretch us beyond our bank balance. Of course, this means there can be a lot of stress and dread associated with home renovations. We have to remember that renovations are marathons rather than sprints, and we need to avoid or manage that sense of drive and stress that can come with home renovations, so here are several strategies you can implement:

Getting the Right Professionals

The fact is that so many of us are focused on the financial aspect that we will hire almost anyone. At the very outset, we need to vet those professionals, and not just ascertain whether they’ve got the expertise to manage the project, but also what they do to deal with potential problems. An excellent contractor will always have a wealth of contacts that can help every step of the way.

Whether they are able to help you deal with plumbing problems and can point you toward plumbing experts like TK Plumbing in emergency situations, or if they have an excellent working relationship with kitchen or bathroom suppliers, meaning that they get a discount, the right professionals will make a huge difference in stress levels. A contractor should be open and honest, meaning that you are informed and in control.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open

If you are someone who needs to know what is happening every step of the way, feeling that you are in control can be hard to come by when there’s a variety of different problems. We should always focus on establishing clear communication with our contractors before the project starts. Discussing potential problems and how they will be addressed can give you a greater sense of comfort.

Learning how to communicate effectively with our contractors happens way before the building work occurs. If you’ve seen them on Instagram and reached out to them, you will get a good idea as to whether they’ll be amenable enough to your ideas. There are so many cowboy builders who are happy to take advantage of people’s good nature that we invariably feel that because of those financial problems that can occur, we must choose the cheaper option. But if you are determined to have your dream kitchen, but the wrong contractor comes along, promises you the earth, and then there’s problem after problem, this can double or even triple the amount of time it takes to get everything ready. And let’s not forget the fact that they may very well be fraudulent contractors who are constantly changing their names to avoid being reported.

It’s not something we should actively worry about, but that’s why you look to see if someone’s reputation precedes them. When you establish clear communication with your contractor, this means no crossed wires or misunderstandings, and those things that occur in the middle of the building project won’t extend the time they are there. So just think about exactly what you want before things start, and then you can work towards an actually beneficial solution.

Focus on the End Results

Motivation is a big factor when we’re going through something like this. It’s very tough to even visualize how the end result will look when you are right in the middle of piles of rubble and plasterboard, not to mention the sensory overload we can experience with the sound of drills and, yes, even the builders singing out of tune (which of course is part of their job description!). However, it’s a short-term hassle for long-term gain.

Visualize that finished project and the benefits it’s going to bring you, whether it’s a freshly painted room, a brand-new kitchen, or a bathroom. You will feel far more positive when you are in the middle and can’t see any progress. When we picture what it’s going to be and recognize the fact that, yes, it’s a couple of months of upheaval, but when you are living in your forever home, it is that short-term frustration for a far better outcome.

Practice Daily Anxiety Management Strategies

The builders are going to be there from Monday to Friday, which of course is when we have to work or take the kids to school and generally have to muddle through. Therefore, think about what is going to help you cope with the chaos and upheaval of the renovation process before it begins! What’s good for you? Think about taking a walk or using noise-canceling headphones combined with earplugs.

There’s a great website called MyNoise which provides a whole wealth of sounds that relax you, but also can help you focus. Finding the right activities that can help you cope with the chaos and stress of the home renovations process will make a huge difference to your mindset. Take the opportunity to also look at getting away if possible. Sometimes just a change of scenery can help. Also, when there’s a lot of dust, look at ways to minimize dust carryover into other rooms, and think about simple things like nasal spray and antihistamines if you have a dust allergy.

Accept the Cycle of Emotions

Home renovations come with a range of emotions, and rather than thinking that we have to avoid feeling frustrated or anxious, actually understanding that we will experience a wealth of feelings can help us to prepare and manage better. Perfectionism can greatly exacerbate our anxiety, along with other things such as decision fatigue.

Ultimately, cosmetic details can be changed later on without significant hassle, particularly if you don’t like the color of the wall that they’ve done for you. There’s a huge range of things that we can do to ensure that we develop a more resilient mindset during the renovation process. There’s definitely a sense of dread that can come with it, but you can absolutely maintain your mental and emotional well-being during the process.
