It happens to all of us. Throbbing headaches that make you want to crawl into bed. They are not strong enough to disrupt your life. But, they do keep you from enjoying it to the fullest. These are minor headaches.
On the other end of the spectrum are migraines. Sometimes they hit you hard and knock you off your feet. This is a serious pain, usually on one side of the head. They make you hyper-sensitive to even the faintest of noise. They make you hyper-sensitive to light, and smell.
Some headaches are brought on by certain foods and certain drinks. So make a note of what you consumed just before the headache may let you know how to avoid triggering them.
Treatment One – Mild tension headache
Headache, over the counter medication like aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen will help with a minor headache. Lay down with the washcloth around the back of your neck. This opens circulation and relieves tension. While you are resting, massage the temples of your forehead.
Treatment Two – Headache with nausea
When your headaches come with nausea, the last thing you want to do is swallow a pill. For this headache, you need to reduce swelling and calm the nerves. Lie down and put the washcloth on the back of your neck. But instead of heat, you will use cold water. You will also put a cold cloth on the front of your neck. The cloth on the back of the neck reduces swelling so the blood will flow easier. The cloth on the throat reduces nausea.
Treatment Three – Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint essential oil is a natural pain killer, and it naturally calms a queasy stomach. Ideally, you would like to lie down, but sometimes you just can’t. Peppermint oil is a treatment you can use on the go. Mix your peppermint oil with a premium carrier oil or add three drops of pure peppermint oil to one tablespoon of your favorite lotion. Rub the peppermint oil mixture to the temples and wrists. When using essential oils it is important to purchase the purest quality oil.
Treatment Four – Sinus
When your headache radiates from the nose area and you feel sinus pressure, you have a sinus headache. Sometimes they are just irritated. Over the counter sinus, medicine will take care of it. If not, you should apply a warm cloth over the nose and cheeks. To open up the sinuses, you can put two drops of eucalyptus oil on each wrist. If you do not like the scent, use peppermint oil or tea tree oil. Always test a drop of essential oil on your skin to see if you will have a reaction to it. If you have a reaction, your oil is too concentrated. Mix it with coconut oil or olive oil.
Treatment Five – The Worst Headache Ever
Sometimes the pain is so bad you really do not know what is causing it and at the moment you do not care. There are several steps you can take to relieve the headache.
- If these steps do not ease your headache, contact your doctor.
- Release any pressure on the head. Remove ponytail holders, caps, and hair clips.
- Use your fingertips to massage the scalp, especially where pain radiates from.
- Drink something that contains caffeine. Coffee and tea are good choices. Since sugar can sometimes bring on a headache, limit the amount of sugar you use.
- Avoid chewing. The action of chewing can make a bad headache worse. Sip soup, and drink plenty of water. This includes chewing gum. Give it up until your headache has passed.
- Lie down in a cool and blackened and place a cold cloth to your head. Concentrate on your breathing. Your goal is total relaxation.
These tips will help you speed healing to your headache. It is worth mentioning, if while on your quest to live a headache free life, you may discover things that trigger them. For example, if you are headache-free until your co-worker arrives wearing strong perfume. Maybe you notice that your headache pops up anytime you drink red wine. Whatever it is, remove the triggers one at a time to stay in control. If you are having headaches, be sure to talk to your doctor.
