From Heartbreak to Healing: My Journey to Rebuilding Life After Loss

heartbreak-to-healing

I have started writing this post so many times but could never bring myself to sharing it. I felt too vulnerable, too exposed I guess. As an introvert, sharing personal aspects of my life has always been a challenge. I’ve always found comfort in privacy, in keeping my emotions and experiences to myself, but today I’m opening up about something deeply personal in the hopes that it may resonate with those who are experiencing loss, and inspire others who are quietly healing. Of course there are a lot of day to day things I could talk about but for today I will start with the following thoughts:

The Loss

Five years ago, my life was turned upside down in a way I could never have imagined. My husband, my best friend, was taken from me by a sudden illness. We had just completed our 3 year project of building our forever home and were looking forward to retirement—our dreams were set. We had worked hard for this time in our life. But in an instant, those dreams were shattered. I was lost, questioning everything, even how God could let this happen. Surviving became a day-to-day effort, and I felt like I was simply existing rather than living.  I know people have said this before, but I felt like I was in a bad dream, I was hoping it was only a dream, but it wasn’t.  That reality day after day hits you like a brick wall.

How many times a day do you think of something and can’t wait to share it with your husband? I found myself doing that so often—until I’d remember that he wasn’t ever going to walk through the door again, that I would never get to talk to him again. No more holding his hand, hearing his voice on the phone, or even feeling annoyed by his little quirks. It was all gone.

Surviving Day to Day

Grieving is different for everyone. For me, it meant a lot of solitude. I’m an introvert by nature, and that meant much of my healing came from being alone with my thoughts, to cry uncontrollably, to remember, and to allow myself the time to process everything that my husband went through in the last few days of his life.

My family—especially my two wonderful sons—were my anchors, always there when I needed them. But even with their support, there were moments when only time, reflection, and prayer could help me find my way.  My word of advice is be kind to yourself. Give yourself the time you need. Don’t push yourself or tell yourself you need to be over this now.  Everyones’ journey, through loss is a personal journey and there is no right or wrong amount of time.

Coming Out of Despair

It’s been a long journey, and one that without that little flame of hope that was still in my heart, that grew with prayer and guidance from our creator, into a heart full of dreams and gratitude for each day that I am given. Now, five years later, I am rebuilding—rebuilding my life, my dreams, and my sense of hope. For the first time in a long time, I feel a sense of direction and purpose again. I’m stepping into a new chapter, one rooted in wellbeing, happiness, and sustainability.

I am starting a new chapter in life which includes building a home. But this time, it’s different. It’s not just a home for comfort or retirement; it’s a home for healing and growth. I’ve purchased land nestled in nature, where I can reconnect with the earth and live sustainably. I’m incorporating off-grid elements as much as possible, using eco-friendly practices to build something that feels in harmony with the world around me.

More than just a home, this project represents my future—a future I once thought was lost. This journey is deeply personal and meaningful to me, and while sharing it feels a little outside my comfort zone, I want to document the process, from the first purchase of the land to the moment I step inside the finished home.

Sharing this journey

I’ll be sharing each step of this journey, including the design, the construction, and eventually the interior decorating—my favorite part. It’s a way of pouring love into this new space, filling it with beauty, joy, and hope for the future. And maybe, just maybe, it will inspire others to find their way through loss, to rebuild when it feels impossible, and to find peace in the simple, sustainable things that matter most.

Thank you for coming along on this journey with me. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s a journey of growth, of hope, and of healing.
