The winter is coming up and it’s coming up quickly. The best thing that you can do is to get into your garden and get things ready and prepared so that when the cold snap hits, your plants aren’t going to be affected too badly. You don’t have to let the colder weather prevent you from getting involved in the garden and getting it ready, either! It might be cold outside, but working in the garden is going to make you feel warmer. Being outside in nature is also a good thing because you’re going to be able to envision your garden as it will be once it blooms in the spring.
Before you get to that point, you need to make sure that your plants will survive the winter in the first place. The worst thing would be getting to Spring and finding that your garden beds have completely died and you have to start from scratch, but that the right time for planting has passed. You don’t want to find that you didn’t look after your trees, and while you can plant Cold Hardy Palm Trees that survive the winter, you need to look after what you have, too. So, below we’ve put together some amazing winter gardening tips that will save your garden and help you to prepare your garden for the season.
Work with the rain, not against it
Dry soil isn’t the best soil for planting and if it’s been dry for too long it will actually repel the water, even when the rain has saturated it. You need to help the rain along and that means looking for a good soil wetting agent. This will help the rain soak into the soil and that will ensure that the soil plays well with seeds. You can even make a compost packed with nutrients to ensure that you give the soil the right food. All of this will work to help you to feed your flowers ready to grow through the winter for you and bud in the next year.
Remember to control the weeds
From pulling them yourself to calling in the experts, you need to ensure that you are staying on top of the weeds as much as possible. Removing them before they mature is important, as when they mature, they set seed and this is much harder to control as it spreads. Removing the roots and weeding by hand is a must, too, and you will find much more effective results.
Get on top of the nitty gritty
All of the jobs that you’ve been putting off, such as moving your underperforming plants or attending to issues with the irrigation you’ve been having, they need to be done. Get them done before the turn of the weather and before your garden is overrun with frost.
Plant your veggies
Winter is the perfect time for planting brassicas and pruning existing fruit trees. Doing these early will ensure that you get what you need ready for the Spring months. Tidy up the patch and get the soil as rich and fertile as possible. Make a list of the veggies you want to plant and then you can be ready to plant later this year.
Don’t forget to prune
You need to give yourself enough time to prune things, and winter is the best time for this. If you have young trees, you can prune them down and get them ready to be able to cope with the rigours of winter. You can then pick up any other issues as early as possible. Without decent pruning, you’re going to find that you are able to create a beautiful display next year as a result. If you want beautiful roses next year, you’ll need to prune those through the winter, too.
Make plans for something new
While you’re busy with the ins and outs of your garden, plan for something new. You can brainstorm whether you want to plant something new, add a rainwater tank, plant new flowers for the year or change the landscape entirely. Your garden can be imagined as a blank canvas, and whatever you want for it could be yours with a little forethought and a lot of attention paid to it. Gardening should be a pleasure and in the winter, the preparations are made for the summer months. Don’t be afraid of a little planning for a great garden.

Are you ready for winter? Now you know how to be!
